Jephte makes a rash vow and sacrifices his only child, and Peter denies Christ as the cock crows. These agonisingly beautiful works by Carissimi and Charpentier are amongst the earliest oratorios. This Lenten programme explores the beginnings of oratorio with more glorious music by Monteverdi, Gesualdo and Anerio – whose publication Teatro armonico spirituale di madrigali lends the concert its name.
