On the eve of the last countdown to Christmas, the Welsh Camerata celebrates an ancient Christian tradition. An antiphon is sung as a prelude to the singing of the Magnificat at Vespers on each of the last 7 days of Advent. Each acclaims a name of Christ, and each text begins with ‘O’, leading to them being known collectively as the ‘O’ Antiphons or the ‘Great Os’.

This concert compresses all seven into one evening, with the original chants followed by settings of the same words by composers from the 16th, 17th and 21st centuries. The concert culminates in Monteverdi's glorious setting of the Magnificat from 1640.

Refreshments will be served after the concert.
