Beethoven in a Viennese context, exemplified by his glorious A major cello Sonata, although even here the mysterious ghost of JS Bach is present. Schubert was Beethoven’s contemporary and, although not regarded as a comparable keyboard genius, his Adagio and Rondo Concertante illustrate a skill with virtuoso piano writing. Mahler’s teenage piano quartet movement, darkly brooding, makes way for Brahms’s irresistibly life-affirming C major trio.
