Members of Ensemble 360 are joined by panellist Marcus du Sautoy (BBC Radio 4’s A Brief History of Mathematics) and Emily Howard (Director of Practice and Research in Science and Music at the Royal Northern College of Music) providing an entertaining exploration of the significance and role of mathematics in music.

Covering Bach’s use of symmetry in the Goldberg Variations to Messiaen’s deployment of prime numbers, from Schoenberg’s 12-tone scale to Debussy and Bartok’s use of the Fibonacci Sequence, and more, the discussion features live musical excerpts and a performance of Emily Howard’s The music of proof for string quartet, written in collaboration with Marcus du Sautoy.
