The London Medical Orchestra ushers in the spring with a joyously bright programme of music, offering outside perspectives on the Italian life, landscape and music.
The fresh energy and warm colours of Mendelssohn’s Symphony No 4 in A Major (‘Italian’) will surely rejuvenate anyone still stuck in the bleak midwinter. It takes us from its cockerel-crow opening theme to its fiery Saltarello, through a beautifully archaic religioso second movement finale, and the warm pastoral notes of the third - one can almost see the sunlight glisten on the surface of a babbling brook.
It is preceded by Schumann’s beautifully light Introduction, Scherzo and Finale (Op 52) - three movements to put a spring in your step.
The concert opens with the Overture in an Italian Style in C major, D 591, which was inspired by Rossini, who took Vienna by storm on his arrival, inspiring the young Schubert to write two overtures, of which this is the first.
Come and be similarly inspired, as spring settles in!

The London Medical Orchestra was formed in 1954, consisting mainly of refugee doctors and dentists from central Europe. Conductors have included Norman Del Mar, Colin Davis and Bernard Keefe; and Sir Adrian Boult and Jacqueline du Pré are among past Vice Presidents. Although many present members of the Orchestra are not members of the medical profession, the Orchestra continues to have as its main purpose the supporting of medical charities through fund-raising concerts.
