  1. String Quintet in C D 956; Op 163 - Franz Schubert

Franz Schubert’s famous string quintet in C major undoubtedly provides a pinnacle of chamber music. When Schubert composed it in 1828 shortly before his death, he chose to add to the usual string quartet an extra cello, resulting with a depth and richness that is absolutely unique. Schubert combines this depth with the qualities of his most beautiful songs: One moment the listener is being seduced by a irresistible and seemingly endless melody, the next moment a heartbreaking, almost painful beauty is being revealed. The music thoughout seems to follow an uncontainable burning quest for answers, but in the end leaves the listeners only with even more questions instead.
