  1. Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis - Ralph Vaughan Williams
  2. Ein deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem) Op 45 - Johannes Brahms

Vaughan Williams’s visionary contemplation of Tallis’s hymn tune was his first success and movingly connects composers across the centuries.

As for the title, I must admit I should like to leave out the word ‘German’ and instead use ‘Human’”, Brahms once commented. The title was intended to emphasise that Brahms didn’t set the medieval poem. Gone are the usual terrors of Judgement Day, instead the words and music emphasise consolation and comfort for those mourning. It’s one of his greatest works, and its success made the 35-year-old composer’s name all over Europe.
