Sinfonia Viva are joined by Northern Irish soprano Aoife Miskelly in a performance of Samuel Barber’s lush and richly textured Knoxville: Summer of 1915. Based on the works of great American writer James Agee, the piece depicts an idyllic, nostalgic evening in Knoxville, Tennessee, with a simple, dreamlike quality, which Barber described as a ‘lyric rhapsody’.
London based trombonist Raph Clarkson has developed an eclectic musical career spanning jazz, avant-garde, classical and salsa music. As a composer, he has been commissioned to write a number of pieces by Sinfonia Viva, including this setting of John Donne’s famous Sonnet.
