  6. Ouverture from Suite No 4 in D - Johann Bernhard Bach

As befits a concert directed by the wonderful flautist Ashley Solomon (of Florilegium) the flute features prominently in all the works (other than the solo violin Fantaise of course!) Ashley Solomon himslelf plays a solo Fantaise by Telemann and the flute duets with the soprano in that sublime aria in Bach's Cantata 151, 'Susser trost, mein Jesu kommt'. We also hear plenty from the other winds, the oboes and d'amores and bassoons in Bach's Canata 123 and in orchestral suites by Telemann and Johann Bernhard Bach. JB was a cousin of the great JS and wrote some very fine music, though most of it has been lost. It can be grand and confident, jolly and sprightly and also very charming and affecting. The Telemann suite is for 2 flutes, 2 oboes, bassoon and strings and is typiclally characterful and quirky with one movement 'Les Cyclops' and another 'Galimatias' (translated 'jumbled or unintelligble words').
