As part of Guildford Borough’s weekend of remembrance and commemoration, we are delighted to be hosting this grand community event.
The concert will be very similar to the Festival of Remembrance held at the Royal Albert Hall, and will feature music from Vivace Chorus and the Friary Guildford Band, along with readings by Dame Penelope Keith, HM Lord Lieutenant of Surrey and Col. Patrick Crowley. There will be a military bugler to play The Last Post and an atmospheric and moving poppy drop.
The concert is in aid of the Royal British Legion and the organisation, along with young people from various cadet groups in the area, will present their colours at the start of the concert. We are also hoping to welcome the young people from the exciting Reeds School Drum Corp, who will play in the GLive foyer earlier in the day and open the concert for us in the evening.
Alongside the concert, we will be running an afternoon of events at GLive. There will be a Great War display, performances by drum and pipe bands, WWI re-enactors and art and military displays. A video, Guildford in the Great War will also be playing during the afternoon. The afternoon events run from 2.30-5.30pm and are completely free – just turn up on the day.
We are also running a schools’ competition for years 8-11, to find the best poetry and art inspired by the theme of War or Peace. Prizes will be awarded during the evening, with the winning poets getting to read their poem out as part of the concert. If your school is interested in taking part, please email Vivace Chorus Chairman no later than June 8th 2018 to be included.
We’re extremely grateful to Guildford Borough Council, who are our major event partners for the evening and who are also providing the prizes for the schools’ competition, and to the following sponsors of this event:
