Sándor Végh, the great Hungarian violinist, founded the International Musicians Seminar in 1972, believing the remote location on the Atlantic coast in Cornwall to be charged with energy which could inspire and reinvigorate musicians – a unique atmosphere far removed from the stresses and strains of a musician's busy travelling life. Over the years, the IMS has become a renowned centre of musical idealism. Steven Isserlis became the Artistic Director in 1996 and IMS has continued to flourish and grow.

This autumn concert series in Cornwall grows out of the Open Chamber Music seminar which takes place every September for 3 weeks. It is an opportunity for musicians to come together to play chamber music and explore the repertoire in a totally unpressured atmosphere. Over one hundred musicians from all over the world are involved during the whole seminar, and over sixty chamber music pieces are rehearsed in total. The concert programmes are decided by the musicians during each week of rehearsal, and the concerts give audiences a chance to hear the music that has been rehearsed and studied so intensively.
