The Fitzwilliam Quartet, one of the longest established quartets in the world, has reached its 50th year. This concert includes Shostakovich's 13th Quartet, a work closely associated with the Fitzwilliam who gave its first performance in the West in the presence of the composer. The Fitzwilliam went on to form a relationship with Shostakovich which lasted until his death. One of the original members of the quartet at the time was Alan George, the viola player, who is still playing in the quartet to this day. The programme also includes Schubert and Glazunov.
