  1. St Matthew Passion BWV 244 - Johann Sebastian Bach

JS Bach’s wife referred to it as the ‘Greatest Passion’. The composer himself broke with protocol, penning the score with red as well as brown ink. Both knew that in the Matthew Passion, Bach had created something special – perhaps even something monumental. One of the finest choral works, perhaps pieces of music, ever written, this tale of the Passion of Christ combines drama with devotion like no other. It questions, challenges and reassures, and contains some of the most beautiful and exquisitely crafted music from a composer who excelled in both those fields.

The Chapel Choir of the Royal Hospital Chelsea is one of the finest professional church choirs in the UK whose members regularly sing with many of the world’s leading consort groups, such as The Sixteen, Tallis Scholars, Stile Antico and Monteverdi Choir. All solos, bar those of the Evangelist and Christus, will be taken by members of the choir. William Vann, Director of Music at the Royal Hospital Chelsea joins forces with the renowned early-instrument forces of the Academy of Ancient Music and world-famed Evangelist James Gilchrist to present Bach’s musical telling of Christ’s final hours on earth. Matthew Rose takes the part of Christus.

‘First-class personnel… it’s the tension and subtlety in the performances that catch the ear’ (Gramophone, on the Royal Hospital Choir)
‘…model singing from the Chapel Choir of the Royal Hospital Chelsea under the meticulous direction of William Vann’ (The Observer, on the Royal Hospital Choir)
‘playing of irresistible colour and exuberance’ (The Telegraph, on the Academy of Ancient Music)
