  1. Alexander's Feast HWV 75 - George Frideric Handel

This oratorio, composed in January 1736, was a great success when first performed, and encouraged Handel to make the transition from writing Italian-style operas to large choral works such as Messiah. The libretto is by Newburgh Hamilton adapted from John Dryden's ode 'Alexander's Feast, or the Power of Music' (1697) which had been written to celebrate Saint Cecilia's Day.

The 60 strong Garleton Singers will be joined by professional soloists and instrumentalists. Their conductor, Stephen Doughty, has been Musical Director since 1994. He is also Chorus Master of Belfast Philharmonic Choir who, in addition to their performances with the Ulster Orchestra, have given a number of world premieres including James Whitbourn’s 'The Seven Heavens' and the European premiere of both Stuart Scott’s 'Requiem Brevis' and Christopher Marshall’s 'Earthsong'. Stephen is also the Musical Director of the Edinburgh Bach Choir.
