An exciting finale to this year's series. Mozart's Hunt quartet was dedicated to Haydn, whose music opened our festival this year. Four players from the Southbank Sinfonia, a vibrant, London-based orchestra of talented young musicians at the start of their careers, are guests joining the Allegri this evening to play Spohr and Mendelssohn's ever-appealing Octet, composed when he was just 16. The Southbank Sinfonia players are Vanessa Chan (violin), Lydia Caines (violin), Katie Perrin (viola) and Daniel Pini (cello).

Louis Spohr was a very popular German composer, violinist and conductor in his day (mid 19th century) but later neglected until a revival of interest in recent years. His prolific output includes violin concertos, operas, symphonies, string and double quartets. He also invented the violin chin rest, and was one of the earliest conductors to use a baton. The Allegri and Southbank Sinfonia have been playing Spohr at the Anghiari Festival in Tuscany; don't miss your chance to hear his music here in mid Wales.

An evening of happy, inspiring music to conclude the 2019 Festival.
