The last concert of the North Wiltshire Symphony Orchestra season takes us to Eastern Europe and beyond, with pieces by Rimsky-Korsakov, Tchaikovsky, and Arutunian’s 1950 trumpet concerto, performed by soloist Dean Wright. Arutunian was an Armenian composer and pianist, best known for his trumpet concerto. Philip Smith, the former principal trumpeter of the New York Philharmonic, describes it as having ‘a very gypsyish, Russian, Armenian kind of sound, with very soulful, beautiful melodies.’
