One of Schubert’s last works, Der Hirt auf dem Felsen (The Shepherd on the rock) was commissioned in 1828 as a showpiece for the soprano Anna Milder and has remained a popular staple of the repertoire ever since. Renowned soprano Elin Manahan Thomas performs this, in a programme that also includes works by Rossini, other songs by Schubert, and Schumann’s Fantasiestücke for clarinet and piano.
