We are delighted to return to Ash for a celebration of inspirational carols and readings from the past to the present day.
Amongst a wide variety of seasonal songs are Edvard Grieg’s beautiful Ave maris stella (Hail, star of the sea), a setting of the 8th-century Latin hymn in praise of the Virgin Mary; Gustav Holst’s evocative In the bleak mid-winter; and Hodie Christus natus est by the Dutch Renaissance master, Jan Sweelinck. You are also invited to join us in singing traditional carols including David Willcocks’s stirring arrangement of Lo, He comes with clouds descending.
Captivating readings by local people are interspersed with the music. They include Advent by Patric Dickinson, The magic of Christmas by Tom Krause and an extract from The diary of a nobody by George and Weedon Grossmith.
More recently composed carols also feature, and I’m pleased to announce that two are by choir members: Sian Hall’s Child of hope and John MacKenzie’s There is no rose of such virtue.
The evening’s entertainment concludes in fittingly exuberant style with James Whitbourn’s brilliant Alleluia jubilate.
I warmly welcome you to join us.
Alan Vincent – conductor
