  1. Overture, from La belle Hélène - Jacques Offenbach
  2. Scottish Fantasy in E flat, for violin and orchestra Op 46 - Max Bruch
  3. Symphony No 1 in E minor Op 39 - Jean Sibelius

This is a programme of late 19th century compositions. Offenbach’s light-hearted overture to the opera, La Belle Hélène, first performed in 1864, is followed by the very popular Scottish Fantasy for violin and orchestra by Max Bruch, completed in 1880 and based on Scottish folk melodies. Sibelius’s first symphony, written when he was 33 years old, was completed in 1899.

Our violin soloist, Leland Chen, is a tutor at the Royal Northern College of Music and has performed with several of the world’s major symphony orchestras.

There will be a free pre-concert talk by our violin soloist at 6.30 pm.
