The Barbican Quartet is the winner of the St Martin’s Chamber Music Competition 2018

The Barbican Quartet open their second concert by continuing their exploration of Haydn, this time with a string quartet from the middle of his life, which he wrote for the King of Prussia, a keen cellist. They continue with Berg’s string quartet, a two-movement work that he wrote while studying composition with Schoenberg. Though the music is modern in style it is lyrical and most approachable. The concert finishes with Schubert’s Death and the Maiden quartet, named after the song that provided the theme for the second movement.
