  1. Symphonic Dances Op 64 - Edvard Grieg
  2. Wand of Youth Suite No 2 Op 1b - Sir Edward Elgar
  3. Symphony No 8 in G Op 88 - Antonín Dvorák

Join Grampian Concert Orchestra under its regular conductor, Tim Tricker, this autumn for some inspirational music, to lift the spirits and beat the darker nights.

Grieg's Dances are a perfect warm-up piece to start the concert. Adapted from a contrasting and varied set of Norwegian folk tunes, they are one of Grieg's few works for large orchestra, and a number of the passages might remind you of some of his more famous works.

This is followed by an Elgar masterpiece of orchestration. Four decades after he composed some tunes for a play staged by the young members of the Elgar family, he arranged the music as the two Wand of Youth suites. He gave the suites the opus number 1 in recognition that they were his earliest surviving compositions, albeit now scored for full orchestra with the mature Elgar’s mastery of orchestration. The orchestra will play the second suite.

Finally, sit back and bask in the sunshine and unbridled melody of Antonín Dvorák's happiest symphony. The Eighth is cheerful, lyrical and draws much of its inspiration from nature and from the Bohemian folk music that Dvorák so loved.
