Formed in 2017, Big Smoke Brass is a 6 piece brass ensemble comprised of classical musicians studying at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. The group is a professional ensemble regularly performing brass function repertoire at weddings and corporate events. Whilst studying at Trinity Laban, the group has studied under the mentorship and guidance of some of the UK’s leading brass instrumentalists including: Oren Marshall, Carol Jarvis, Chris Deacon, Andrew Hendrie and Andrew Dunn.
Today’s concert is part of our Winter recital series, performing at venues across London, spanning across the end of October to the beginning of January. The ensemble will be performing from their expansive list of classical repertoire, performing rearrangements of baroque chamber music to brand new compositions from the present day.
Big Smoke Brass's instrumentation consists of 2 trumpets, 2 flugelhorns, tuba and percussion.
The ensembles unorthodox use of a pair of flugelhorns as an alternative to the brass quintet’s horn and trombone, combines uniquely with the rest of the ensemble, sounding different to that of any other conventional brass quintet.
There is no published repertoire written for the group, as a result, everything performed in this concert has been specially arranged or reorchestrated for the ensemble.
As well as performing publicly, Big Smoke Brass is currently working hard recording their first pop EP. The ensemble aims to release their energetic and original recordings by the start of 2020 on all of the major music platforms.
