Romsey Choral Society regrets to announce that its concert on March 22nd at St Cross has sadly been cancelled owing to the Covid-19 pandemic. The health of performers and audience has to be our top priority
Romsey Choral Society is delighted to perform their spring concert in the sublime surroundings of the Church of St Cross, Winchester. This year, the new musical director, Richard Pearce, will lead the choir on a Grand Musical Tour of Europe spannng five centuries and showcasing music by composers hailing from 10 countries!
The programme offers the audience a range of pieces to suit all tastes, and brings out the versatility of the choir and the remarkable acoustic of the beautiful building. The tour starts and ends in the United Kingdom with two versions of I Was Glad: the first by Henry Purcell, written for the coronation of King James II in 1685 and the second by Charles Hubert Hastings Parry, written for the coronation of King Edward VII in 1902. In between, you will travel in time and place from the Renaissance to the twentieth century, from Portugal and Italy to Germany, Norway and more. With Palestrina, Rachmaninov, Mozart, Monteverdi and Poulence, to name but a few of the fantastic composers. The highlight is Allegri's Miserere, arguably one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written.
