  1. The Creation Hob XXI/2 - (Franz) Joseph Haydn

Joseph Haydn's famous oratorio depicts the beginning of the world as recounted in Genesis and other sources. Glorious melodies abound in joyful choruses and achingly beautiful arias, duets and trios. Haydn's masterpiece was an instant success at its première in 1798 and remains immensely popular with choirs and audiences to this day.
The orchestra plays a crucial role in the story-telling. The composer's brilliantly descriptive orchestration is manifest in the opening “Representation of Chaos”. It's an astonishing tour de force which sets the scene for the musical marvels to come.
Haydn was inspired to write a large choral work having heard Handel's oratorios during two highly successful visits to England. The first work ever sung by the newly formed Gravesham Choral Society was The Creation. We have been inspired to programme it again in celebration of 40 years of splendid music-making and warmly invite you to join us.
