The critically acclaimed Oxfordshire early music trio Musical Banquet will be making a welcome return to St Mary the Virgin Church, Kidlington, Oxfordshire at 7:30pm on Saturday 22nd September 2018 and performing a Gala Fundraising Concert in aid of St Mary's Choristers. Step back in time 400 years to hear the group serve up another delectable menu of musical delicacies including vocal and instrumental works by Dowland, Campion and Purcell, along with some of their English and European contemporaries, interspersed with colourful period anecdotes.
The Grade I listed church of St Mary dates from the 13th century and occupies an ancient site in the village between the river Cherwell and the Oxford canal, some 5 miles north of the city. Its octagonal spire, rising 171 feet above ground level, is a familiar landmark in the Cherwell valley, and known as `Our Lady's Needle'. Other notable features include some fine examples of medieval stained glass and, at the east end, beautifully carved oak misericords, thought to be the oldest in an English Parish Church.
Tonight is an unusual and highly entertaining opportunity to experience works performed on period instruments combined with Countertenor voice much as the 17th and 18th century audience might have heard them. With plenty of surprises along the way, the concert will be presented in the group's characteristically innovative, energetic and imaginative style and the gourmet ‘menu’ will include some spicy 'musical nibbles' from 17th century Spain, accompanied by Baroque Guitar, sweet treats from one of England's finest composers, Henry Purcell, and a special tribute to the poet and songwriter Robert Burns. A tempting indulgence for all musical gastronomes!
Ticket prices include a complimentary souvenir programme and interval hospitality, when there will be an opportunity to meet and talk with the musicians, and all proceeds from this event will be donated towards suporting St Mary's Choristers.
