It has been said that when you hear Haydn you know that everything is well with the world. Our opening piece by the composer who, more than anyone else, nurtured and developed this medium, was his last completed string quartet. Hans Keller says that ‘it tops all of his other quartets in that it has simply everything one could wish for’. In Beethoven’s fifth foray into quartet writing we find the young composer at his most Mozartean. This bright and indeed bold composition threatens at times to burst at the seams. The late romantic Austrian, Hugo Wolf wrote his wonderfully lively and optimistic Serenade - an intense and vivid portrayal of the Italian spirit, lasting just seven minutes. Our English music spot is amply filled by Alan Rawsthorne’s engaging and colourful concert duo for two violins.
