  1. String Quartet No 23 in F minor Op 20 No 5 - (Franz) Joseph Haydn
  2. String Quartet No 1 in D major Op 11 - Pyotr Tchaikovsky
  3. String Quartet No 9 in C, 'Rasumovsky' Op 59 No 3 - Ludwig van Beethoven

Like Beethoven, Tchaikovsky was a great symphonist and an equally great quartet writer. The small forces of the string quartet never seem to hamper Tchaikovsky’s capacity for sumptuous harmonies and textures. The slow movement of this piece has become justly famous and is transcribed for orchestra and other instrumental combinations. Haydn’s profound and searching Op 20 No 5 ends in a fugue as does Beethoven’s famous C major quartet … and what different fugues they are!

There are six concerts in the Endellions' 40th Anniversary Series at West Road Concert Hall, Cambridge - on the following Wednesday evenings: 24th October 2018, 21st November 2018, 30th January 2019, 27th February 2019, 24th April 2018 and 22nd May 2019. Full details can be found here
