  1. The diary of the one who disappeared - Leoš Janácek
  2. The grief of Antigone - Edward Nesbit

Two nights only! Award winning Shadwell Opera present Janacek’s dramatic song cycle Diary of one who disappeared, alongside the newly commissioned piece for five voices and piano The grief of Antigone based on Sophocles’s Oedipus at Colonus, by composer Edward Nesbit.

Featuring international rising star Sam Furness, Diary of one who disappeared transposes Janacek’s countryside story of a farmer’s ‘infatuation’ with a ‘gypsy’ girl into a complex contemporary tale. The double bill will form a startling exploration of themes of travel, exile and place.

Shadwell Opera is one of the UK’s leading opera voices, performing in venues expected and unexpected since 2009. Working with some of the country’s most talented young singers and instrumentalists, they have received continuous critical acclaim for their work, in so doing showcasing the high quality the new generation of performers can achieve. They perform contemporary opera with the backing of orchestral forces, often contextualising recent works within a wider European modernism.

The work of London-based composer Edward Nesbit been performed by groups such as the London Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and his song cycle A Pretence of Wit was shortlisted for the vocal category of the 2013 British Composer Awards.
