  1. Doctor Atomic Symphony - John Adams
  2. Symphony No 2 in D Op 43 - Jean Sibelius

The National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain is a teenage phenomenon, driven by the energy and passion of 164 extraordinarily talented young musicians. Its last two visits to Nottingham brought the house down and this performance promises to do the same. Opening the concert is Rick Dior’s tongue-in-cheek homage to the great science fiction and horror movies of the mid-20th century. On a more sober scientific note, John Adams gave his opera, Doctor Atomic, symphonic form in 2007, distilling the moral issues raised by splitting the atom into an intense and feverish twenty minutes. Adams evokes the pressure cooker atmosphere of Robert J Oppenheimer’s Los Alamos laboratory and its devastating consequences. Sibelius’s 2nd Symphony offers a more affirmative vision, inspired by Italy, but staying close to his Finnish roots. Sibelius’s expansive melodies and rich colours make it the most enduringly popular of his symphonic output. The finale is as heroic as statement as you’ll find in his music and will be all the more uplifting when proclaimed by the largest orchestra that you’ll see all year.
