As part of a year-long project in conjunction with the Worcester-based English Symphony Orchestra, celebrating ‘David Matthews in The Heart of England’, April Fredrick – “one of the most beautiful, unalloyed, expressive voices I have ever heard” – will premiere the composer’s latest work with Orchestra of the Swan: a song-cycle based on Alphonse de Lamartine’s partly-autobiographical poem ‘The Lake’. Continuing the themes of loss and lamentation, this is followed by Kenneth Woods’s own arrangement of the second movement of Schubert’s String Quartet no14 – composed when he himself was dying – which features five variations on his great song Der Tod und das Mädchen. The concert ends with a symphony that dwells on a child’s vision of Heaven, with April returning to sing the final movement’s rapturous Das himmlische Leben.
