  1. Ein deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem) Op 45 - Johannes Brahms, arranged by the composer for piano 4 hands, soloists and choir
  2. Vier ernste Gesänge (4 Serious Songs) Op 121 - Johannes Brahms

Brahms composed his Requiem in 1866, the year after his mother’s death. He took the texts from the German Lutheran Bible, rather than the traditional Latin liturgy; he also intended the work to be a comfort to the living, rather than a prayer for the dead, and omits mention of the Last Judgement. The work established Brahms’s reputation as a master composer, and contains movements of sublime beauty as well as dramatic excitement. We shall be performing the piece in German, with an accompaniment for piano duet compiled by Brahms himself.
The programme also includes Brahms’s Four Serious Songs, for baritone and piano.
