  4. Symphony No 3 in C minor, 'Organ' Op 78 - Camille Saint-Saëns

We open our concert season with a rare piece of purely instrumental music by Puccini - the romantic intermezzo from his third opera, Manon Lescaut. Our programme continues with another romantic work, the oboe concerto by Richard Strauss, written when the composer was 81. The first half is completed by the instantly-successful and ever-popular Boléro. Our concert concludes with Saint-Saëns's Organ Symphony, regarded by the composer and scholars of his music as a summation of his life and works.
