The first London New Wind Festival was held in 1998 and comprised of three concerts of contemporary music held in the British Music Information Centre. Prior to that Catherine Pluygers and Jonathan Lindridge ran the New Wind Symphony Orchestra which gave its debut in the Queen Elizabeth Hall in 1985. The aims of the orchestra were to introduce unknown and new works to the general public and to research and promote neglected and new works for the wind orchestra.

The wind festival developed as a more flexible approach to achieving those same aims and objectives. In this concert the compositions by Fabian Svensson, Arygyro Koliogiorgi and Dorothee Eberhardt will be UK premiers. The composition by Douglas Hedwig will be a European premier and that of Michiko Shimanuki will be a world premier.

The festival reflects the wide interest of its director, Catherine Pluygers. For the last two year it has added improvisation concerts to the main core of classical contemporary concerts for wind chamber ensembles. They have also promoted new music for wind symphony orchestras, new music for brass ensembles and new music by women composers.

Funding for the festival comes from the Holst Foundation; Hinrichson Foundation; Leche Trust; PRS Foundation for New Music and the Pam Main Arts Trust.
