  1. Suite for Variety Orchestra - Dmitry Shostakovich
  2. Concerto for Trumpet in A flat - Alexander Artunian
  3. Symphony No 4 in E minor Op 98 - Johannes Brahms

The Suite for Variety Orchestra by Shostakovich is a charming popular eight-movement work for full orchestra, compiled from themes from his film and stage scores.

Arutunian’s trumpet concerto, played by Gareth Small, Principal Trumpet with the Hallé Orchestra has become a concert standard with its Armenian kind of sound, soulful melodies and plenty of excitement.

Finally, Brahms’s 4th and last symphony is always a favourite, full of melodies, rich orchestral colours and contrasts leading, in the last movement, to a thunderous and dramatic conclusion.

There will be a pre-concert talk by our trumpet soloist at 6.30pm
