Our first outing of the year is in the dignified setting of Trinity College chapel and the material is suitably noble. Holst strikes a sombre tone with his exploration of the mysteries of death and eternity. Elgar's 'Bavarian' songs, disarmingly rustic at times, woo you with their lyricism and are rich expressions of the German romantic tradition. We conclude with Jonathan Dove's 'The Passing of the Year': something to really blow the cobwebs away.
