  1. Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis - Ralph Vaughan Williams
  2. Concerto for cello and orchestra in E minor Op 85 - Sir Edward Elgar
  3. Overture, from L'Italiana in Algeri, 'The Italian Girl in Algiers' - Gioachino Rossini
  4. Symphony No 4 in A, 'Italian' Op 90 - Felix Mendelssohn

This concert is a perfect marriage of English and Italian orchestral favourites.

Two Classic Hall of Fame works, Vaughan Williams’s melancholy Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis suitably sets the scene as Jamal Aliyev takes the stage to perform Elgar’s most beautiful cello concerto.

Mendelssohn’s buoyant and cheerful Symphony No 4, ‘Italian’ closes this concert with panache and flair; a charming expression of how Italy made him feel. Lush, soulful, with a generous dose of energy.

Free: join BBC Radio Northampton’s John Griff for a free pre-concert talk with Valentina Peleggi at 2pm.
