A new work in three parts by composer Kevin Malone pays tribute to West Yorkshire’s textile communities. A concerto for violin and orchestra commissioned by Opera North’s Andy Long, A Day in the Life describes a typical day for a 19th century child worker in a northern textile mill, inspired by the autobiography of Robert Blincoe, ‘the real Oliver Twist’.

Completing the programme, A Peterloo Parade is a playful overture combining current and historical rally cries in the UK and USA with songs sung before the 1819 Peterloo massacre in Manchester; and My Mill Life is a work for solo violin and pre-recorded monologues by current and former mill workers in Leeds and Bradford.
