Literally translating as grasshopper, a sauterelle was the name given to the removable valve blocks added to natural horns during the late 19th century. Ensemble Sauterelle sets out to discover and perform music written for the horn during the later 19th and early 20th centuries, a particularly exciting time as players moved from the natural horn to the various different systems of valves in use around Europe. Formed by a new generation of period instrument performers, members of the group have worked with a variety of the leading period instrument ensembles, including the OAE, AAM, and the English Concert.

For this concert, a quartet of horn players – playing both natural and valved instruments – will be joined by a quartet of singers, to explore the wealth of music written for this combination in Germany and Austria during the late 19th century. Centred around Schumann’s Funf Gesänge Op 137 and Schubert’s Nachtgesang im Walde, the concert will also feature a variety of works by their lesser know contemporaries.
