  1. Christmas Oratorio - Bob Chilcott
  2. Gloria in D RV 589 - Antonio Vivaldi

Antonio Lucio Vivaldi (1678-1741) is recognised as one of the greatest Baroque composers. He was renowned during his lifetime as a composer and a virtuoso violinist; his fame and influence were widespread across Europe. The Gloria is a joyous work, overflowing with distinctive melodies and rhythms which give it immediate appeal. Choir and orchestra create rich contrasts of mood: exuberant and reflective, joyous and sombre, playful and tender, with a thrilling theatrical quality.

Bob Chilcott (b 1955) is a contemporary composer who has a passionate commitment to working with amateur choirs. He has enjoyed a lifelong association with choral music, as a chorister and choral scholar in the choir of King's College, Cambridge, and as a member of the King's Singers. He became a full-time composer in 1997. We are excited to be giving the second public performance of Chilcott’s brand new Christmas Oratorio, which premiered on August 1st this year at the Three Choirs Festival. In this majestic work words from St Luke and St Matthew are intertwined with poetry from the 16th to the 19th century to create a compelling re-telling of the Christmas story.
