Few instruments were left unchanged by Beethoven, such was the depth of the composer’s radicalism. The cello came in for special treatment – given new agency in the composer’s symphonies, and effectively handed a brand new genre when Beethoven reinvented the cello sonata. Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra Principal Peter Adams is joined by Magdalena Nasidlak for this concert featuring three such works, from the tentative adventures of the first, the emerging technical brilliance of the second and the new worlds of the fifth, in which Beethoven teeters on the threshold of his extraordinary late style.

The concert is scheduled to end at approximately 21.30
