There was hardly a genre Beethoven didn’t transform. From his very first violin sonata, Beethoven was raising the idea of a violin-piano partnership to fresh heights in technique and expression. Here the Oxford Philharmonic’s violinists Tamás András and Evgenia Epshtein join Katya Apekisheva and divide three sonatas between them – from the charm and variegated humour of Beethoven’s first two to the florid style and compelling contrasts of his much loved ‘Spring’ sonata. In between, they explore works by Beethoven’s contemporaries while Tamás and Evgenia come together for Viotti’s first serenade, one of the finest works for two violins ever written.

The concert is scheduled to end at approximately 17.05
