Like Jack, you must be nimble and quick to ensure you secure a ticket for the City of Cambridge Symphony Orchestra's next concert. The main work, Beethoven’s Symphony No 9, ‘Choral’, is a huge favourite that has mesmerised audiences since its premiere in 1824. The combined choirs of Corpus Christi, Fitzwilliam, Girton and St Catharine’s Colleges will be giving Schiller’s ‘Ode to Joy’ a lustre seldom heard. When you add four fine soloists to the expertise and expressive power of the City of Cambridge Symphony Orchestra, a magical evening is assured. The Sinfonietta by Leon Janácek is a splendid companion piece. It is characterful, brassy and exotic, with an opening as arresting as the finale of Beethoven’s symphony.
