Conductor Antony Hermus is the Principal Guest Conductor of Opera North and the perfect tour guide for this musical flight through the Nordic countries! Pianist Roman Kosyakov is the 2018 winner of the Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition.

The show opens with Grieg's Suite No 1 from Peer Gynt, packed full of lush melodies and teasing suspenseful themes that build up to the ever-popular In the Hall of the Mountain King which audiences will instantly recognise from the Alton Towers adverts. Then, follows Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No 2, and the concert closes with Sibelius's Symphony No 2, the iconic Nordic Symphony that includes an ominous passage of plucked basses and cellos at the start of the second movement and a theatrical final movement with traditional folk-song elements woven in.

Free: pre-concert talk at 6:30

We're pleased to announce that for the RPO's 2020 performances, pre-concert talks are back! They will be held in the auditorium with members of the orchestra. These will be free to attend for ticket holders and last approximately half an hour.
