Duoende aims to find a common language between two apparently very different worlds: Giulia Grassi’s classical piano and the folk sound of Francesco Berrafato’s diatonic accordion.
Through both the composition of original repertoire and the arrangement of classical and folk pieces, the duo works on the search for an innovative timbre given by the combination of these two instruments and historical backgrounds.
Duoende’s compositions aim to represent a dialogue between the genres and also a juxtaposition between the structure of Western classical music and the freedom and circularity of folk music.
The duo has performed across Italy, UK, France and Norway in venues such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, School of Oriental and African Studies University , the Foundling Museum (London, UK), the Italian Institute of Culture of Oslo (Norway), Arcipelaghi Sonori, International Folk Music Festival(Modena, Italy).
In 2019 Duoende recorded the first album, Rosa&Dmitri at Agder University in Kristiansand, Norway. The title Rosa and Dmitri refers to folk songwriter Rosa Balistreri and classical composer Dmitri Shostakovich.
The encounter between Balistreri and Shostakovich represent the soul of the whole project: two cultures that merge together creating a new form of expression.
