Nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 1993, Gavin Bryars’s Jesus’ blood never failed me yet is a deeply powerful and haunting improvisation on a 1971 recording of a homeless man singing on the streets of London, which still has resonance and relevance today.

The predicament and frailty of the elderly man seems utterly at odds with his nobility and simple faith, and Bryars composed the piece as his tribute to the man’s incredible spirit and optimism.
