Today is an exciting day of inspiring new music as part of Song Futures; Oxford Lieder’s initiative for commissioning outstanding composers, programming existing works by living composers, and illuminating new music for all.

James Gilchrist and Anna Tilbrook enjoy a long-standing and acclaimed partnership. Today, they begin their programme with a selection of Schubert songs, and they perform Beethoven’s An die ferne Geliebte, one of the first major cycles of the song repertoire. (Is Beethoven an Enlightenment composer? Find out on Saturday in Event 37!).

James and Anna have an impressive track record of premiering new works, integrated with established masterpieces of the repertoire. In this programme, they give the first of three world premieres today: Baruch: Ten Propositions of Baruch Spinoza by Michael Zev Gordon. Michael is Professor of Composition at the University of Birmingham, and his works have been performed by many leading artists, including Britten Sinfonia, London Sinfonietta, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Exaudi. Fitting within our sub-theme of the Enlightenment, he has set texts from Spinoza’s Ethics, a bold, wide-ranging, and seminal treatise of Enlightenment philosophy.

This concert will be streamed completely live from the Holywell Music Room. Shortly afterwards, it will also be available to watch again (using the same ticket and link) until 1 November 2020. Click here for further information on how tickets will work this year.
