  1. Lied der Mignon: So lasst mich scheinen, from 4 Gesänge aus 'Wilhelm Meister' D 877 - Franz Schubert
  2. 4 Early Songs - Aaron Copland
  3. 6 Romances Op 6 - Pyotr Tchaikovsky

In this Bloomsbury Festival lunchtime concert, soprano, Adaya Malka Peled, and pianist, Chavdar Mazgalov, will take you on a journey through some of the magical and mesmerising music of three great and important composers: Franz Schubert, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Aaron Copland.

Copland’s Four Early Songs were composed after the First World War in 1918, to poems by Aaron Schaffer and John Duncan. The cycle’s composition is strongly influenced by the late romanticism and, mostly, by the impressionist era. Each song has its own world full of colours, and together, they create a unique and mysterious atmosphere to the whole piece.

The recital continues with 4 Mignon Lieder by Franz Schubert. Mignon and her songs are presented in Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s novel Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship. Her obscure, yet heartbreaking character, captivated and inspired many composers since the 18th century. Mignon is a young orphan girl who carries a very dark secret within her. She is adopted by Wilhelm Meister, and is living in constant longing and pain. Schubert’s well-known compositions of these songs reveal Mignon’s fragility, internal struggle and passions.
