  1. Quintet for piano and strings in A, 'Die Forelle' (Trout) D 667 - Franz Schubert
  2. Five negro folksongs in counterpoint, for string quartet - Florence Beatrice Smith Price

Schubert’s song ‘Die Forelle’, or The Trout, tells the story of a fisherman catching a wriggling trout to the distress of an onlooker. The song’s melody and rippling piano figurations – suggesting flowing water or perhaps a leaping fish – provide the basis for the Trout Quintet, one of Schubert’s most familiar and irresistibly joyful works.

Florence B Price’s extensive and largely neglected output – including symphonies, concertos, chamber music and much more – is at last enjoying a revival. Two Counterpoints perfectly capture, in miniature, her music’s mix of modernity and tradition, bringing together her formal conservatoire training with melodies from the African-American church, spirituals and the blues.
