  1. Symphony No 1 Op 9 - Samuel Barber
  2. Concerto for Cello and Orchestra No 1 in E flat Op 107 - Dmitry Shostakovich
  3. Symphony No 4 in E minor Op 98 - Johannes Brahms

‘Kian Soltani was the sublime cello soloist, effortlessly lyrical and profoundly touching’, wrote The Guardian when this extraordinary Austrian-Persian cellist played here on the South Bank a couple of years ago, adding that ‘the whole thing was outstanding’. So we’re delighted to welcome him back in Shostakovich’s powerful First Cello Concerto – and with Marin Alsop conducting, this should be no ordinary performance. Alsop is a conductor who illuminates everything she touches, so whether it’s the restless energy of Samuel Barber’s all-American classic or the autumnal beauty of Brahms’s magnificent farewell to the symphony, expect uncompromising sincerity and emotion without limits.
