  4. Sonata for Piano No 6 in A Op 82 - Sergey Prokofiev

One of China’s most promising young pianists, Ke Ma is already recognised for the drama of her playing. She transports us to the extremes of emotion, beginning with Mozart’s sonata in a minor key, perhaps representing his despair and dark desperation at his mother’s illness and death in Paris, at the time this was composed. Debussy’s famous ‘Clair de lune’, features the beauty of his great sonorous landscape, followed by the noble colour of the Passepied. The first of Prokofiev’s three ‘war sonatas’, the epic No 6, presents the horrors of war from the outset, from a barbaric march with angular rhythms, to a slow waltz, the finale ends with a return of the ruthless march and the sounds of machine-gun fire.

Admission price includes tea, coffee and cake.
